#Piran is a seaside town in Slovenian Istria, with about 3,700 inhabitants (2020) on the Slovenian side of the Gulf of Piran. Piran is the seat of the municipality, parish and administrative unit of the same name (it also has departments in Lucia), as well as the offices of the Port Authority and the international maritime border crossing.

The settlement is located on the cape of the Piran peninsula, in the immediate vicinity of Portorož. Piran is located in an area where indigenous members of the Italian national community live and where, in addition to Slovenian, Italian is also the official language. In Piran, in addition to Slovenian primary and secondary schools, the Italian primary school Vincenzo e Diego de Castro and the Antonio Sema Piran Gymnasium also operate. The private faculty Gea College - Piran College of Entrepreneurship (VŠP) is based in the city.

In addition to the old town center next to Mandrac and the central Tartini square, Piran includes the following unofficial areas or city districts: Punta, Pusterla in the north, Kaštel, the area by the outer harbor (Luka Piran), the city wall and the cemetery behind it, the settlement of individual houses Belvedere or Mogoron, and below it Fornače, where there is a parking lot and a city parking garage, as well as the Marine Biological Piran station.

Piran is the headquarters of the Coastal Galleries (which include the Piran City Gallery, Herman Pečarič Gallery and Meduza 2 Gallery, two Koper galleries and one in Venice). The city also has the Apollonius Palace Gallery, the Lera Gallery, the Gallery of Impressions on Fornače, the Piran Aquarium, the Sergej Masera Maritime Museum, the Museum of Underwater Activities, the Museum of Shells and Snails, and the Tartini House and the Tartini Theater Piran, which is managed by the public institution Avditorij Portorož.
