Have FUN with Bach's Bourrée -- Try Inversions!! (Please read description below)

ABOUT INVERSIONS: In this famous little piece I switch the hands around on the repeats, which creates a phenomenon known in music theory as "invertible counterpoint". Bach, Handel and other Baroque composers used this technique all the time, the only difference being that inversions did not require hand crossing. They would simply write the treble line in the bass and the bass line in the treble, that is, swapping each line with the other. I find that inverting these two lines, especially in the second half, creates an austere kind of character not unlike Bach would accomplish many years later in his "The Art of Fugue".

Switching the hands around (I like R over L) on the repeats is really fun and the resulting music is refreshing and intriguing! You can also do this kind of thing with the Two-Part Inventions, although some work better than others. When you swap the treble and bass lines, this automatically creates an "inversion at the octave". Bach also used inversions at other intervals than octaves (like thirds and sixths).
