GSG 9, or Grenzschutzgruppe 9, is a German counter-terrorism and special operations police unit of the German Federal Police. It was created in 1972 in the wake of the Munich Olympics hostage crisis and is one of the world's most elite and specialized law enforcement and counter-terrorism units. GSG 9 is tasked with responding to major incidents including hostage taking, kidnapping, terrorism and extortion.
