A night of high stakes in Abu Dhabi took an unfortunate turn. In the heavyweight-title headliner, Tom Aspinall, making his first defense of the undisputed crown, squared off with challenger Ciryl Gane. The two men traded heavy blows early on, Gane even drawing first blood with a jab to Aspinall’s nose.
But with just under a minute to go in the first round, the bout came to a halt. Gane, while throwing a kick, inadvertently poked Aspinall in both eyes. The champion, unable to continue, informed referee Jason Herzog he could no longer see — and at the 4 :35 mark the fight was ruled a No-Contest.
Post-fight the frustration was clear. Aspinall, still shocked, said: “What the… the fight was just getting going.” Gane issued an apology for the accidental foul and lamented the manner in which the opportunity ended.
For the organization, it was a disappointing outcome. UFC President Dana White described it as a “great showing, s---ty ending” and confirmed plans are underway for a rematch.
So what’s next? The heavyweight division remains in limbo, the crowd left unsatisfied, and both fighters will surely want to settle the score properly next time. I know Jon “Bones” Jones is somewhat jealous that he never done a double eye poke.
