Pre operative planning : Revision Hip Replacement

When patients come for revision hip replacement , its a challenge for the surgical team . Unlike primary hip replacement the available biological resources are limited :
1. Poor bone quality
2. Poor blood supply
3. Scarring of tissue
4. Low immunity
5. Poor muscle tone
6. Limb length difference
7. Low patient confidence

Lots of planning, preparation and anticipation has to be put in before even admitting the patient. All possible sizes of implants for femur as well as acetabulum must be available at the time of revision hip replacement. Adequate blood for transfusion and a competent team of anaesthesia to cover the expected long surgery should be ready.
In spite of all this many a times the rrsults of revision hip replacement are not as good as primary hip replacement. There should be a thorough discussion between the surgeon and the family regarding all this before taking the patient.
