Destruction of Red Blood Cells & Hemoglobin 🩸

Red blood cells (RBCs) have a lifespan of about 120 days, after which they are phagocytosed by macrophages in the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. This process is known as hemolysis. During RBC destruction, hemoglobin is broken down into heme and globin. The heme component is further degraded into iron and biliverdin, which is eventually converted into bilirubin and excreted in bile. The globin proteins are broken down into amino acids, which are recycled for new protein synthesis. The iron released is either stored in the liver or used in the production of new RBCs. Understanding this process is crucial for diagnosing and managing hemolytic anemias and other hematological disorders! 🧬🔬
