Melanistic genet eats puffaddder

Описание к видео Melanistic genet eats puffaddder

Video footage of a regular rusty-spotted genet (Genetta maculata) and a rare melanistic form eating a puffadder that was killed by farm workers in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The melanistic form of rusty-spotted genets seems to be quite unusual across Africa, but relatively common in the area surrounding Mbombela, Mpumalanga, South Africa. To date, 4 melanistic genets have been recorded from Mbombela alone. Of these four records, this is the only known living individual. The first one (recorded in August 1998) is definitely dead by now (genets have a maximum lifespan of roughly 23 years in captivity). The other two records were an individual killed by dogs in 2020 and another one hit by a car on the N4 highway in 2023.
