Do you identify with your nose? I know that’s kind of a strange and interesting question, but one thing I’ve noticed in my decade plus as a rhinoplasty surgeon, is that a lot of my patients actually forget what their original noses used to look like. This typically happens anywhere from six to eight weeks after the surgery, and often to the degree of laughing, or cringing when I pull up their pre-operative photos at follow-up appointments. Their response too seeing their old nose typically goes like, ‘Oh, gosh... I don’t even remember that nose!’ This, in my opinion, is because they never really identified with having a nose with those characteristics. Whether it be a dorsal bump, a droopy tip, or the bridge being crooked. I think this is really what drives a lot of people to rhinoplasty procedure. They’re uncomfortable with how their nose looks on their face, or they’re uncomfortable with how the rest of their facial features look because their nose is unbalances their facial harmony. I’m not sure which one comes first, but I do find it very interesting that people forget what their nose used to look like. This is a phenomenon that I’ve been exploring, and I call it, ’Nose Self Identification.’ What do you identify as your nose looking like? This is an interesting and somewhat unexplored aspect of the psychology of rhinoplasty.
