Peer review has long been established and recognized as the defining feature of scholarly communication and is largely considered vital for ensuring quality and integrity in scholarly literature, finally ensuring curation of contents. Even more so today, when internet and social media have become the major vehicle for dissemination.

Peer review has widely been investigated and with this webinar we will share some large-scale data from an extensive, recent research discussing where peer review stands today and where it needs to head for a healthy and ethical future. We shall also discuss the Peere protocol for sharing data on the peer-review process, which recommends the adoption of standards to ensure ethics, responsible management, data protection and privacy in compliance with the current EU legal framework, including the General Data Protection Regulation.

Public organizations are widely recognizing research and investigation into peer review as a valuable investment. It appears vital that a common understanding of consolidating and sharing data on peer review could become a clear marker of legitimacy in a scenario where predatory journals still have an uncomfortable role. It is not hard to imagine the value that standards for certifying and crediting reviewers and editors, or supporting data and journal management, already have. Although there is much to be done, supporting and participating to research on peer review promises to create better processes for authors, reviewers and editors. More importantly, it will boost the reliability, rigour and relevance of the scientific literature.
