The Jatiya Sangsad premises and the adjacent Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka turned into a zone of confrontation on Friday afternoon as a group of people identifying themselves as ‘July warriors’ clashed with the police and security forces while attempting to rally against the signing of the July National Charter 2025.
Meanwhile, the National Citizen Party, formed with the key organisers of the July uprising that ousted the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, did not sign the charter, saying that it lacked implementation guidelines.
Criticising the political parties that joined the July National Charter signing ceremony, NCP convener Nahid Islam on Friday said that some politicians were signing a paper while betraying with people.
He made this remark at the launching event of Jatiya Sramik Shakti, NCP’s labour front, in Eskaton Garden area in Dhaka.
The demonstrators at the JS area, at a press briefing on Friday evening announced that they would hold Highway Blockade programme from 2:00pm till 5:00pm on Sunday across the country, demanding protection for the July victims and their families, rehabilitation, and state recognition for the July martyrs and fighters in the July charter.
Meanwhile, more than a dozen, including the police and protesters were injured during clashes among the law enforcers and the protesters.
The people injured and families of the martyred in the July Uprising initially gathered for a sit-in programme at the Parliament premises on Manik Mia Avenue since Friday morning.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Tejgaon zone Md Ibne Mizan told New Age that seven to eight police members were injured during the violence that started at about 11:00am as the ‘July Fighters’ took positions at the venue of the signing ceremony.
‘The protesters tried to vandalise the stage of the signing ceremony when the law enforcers intervened and tried to disperse them. At that time, they turned violent and tried to attack on the law enforcers,’ he said.
The demonstrators vandalised at least five police vehicles, set fire to the temporary reception room, control room, and furniture built in front of the MP Building for the July Charter signing ceremony, DC Mizan said.
Later, the police several rounds of sound grenade, tear shells and charged batons to disperse the crowd, he added.
Dispersed from the Parliament area, a group of protesters subsequently blocked the road in front of Rapa Plaza at Dhanmondi 27, causing long tailbacks.
Rabiul Awal Buiyan, brother of martyr Imam Hossain and joint secretary of the July Shaheed Paribar Association, told New Age that about 50 ‘July Fighters’ were injured in the clash.
Of them, 10 to 12 were admitted to several city hospitals, said Rabiul, who sustained a severe finger injury during the clash.
Expressing frustration over ‘July Fighters’ not being invited to the July charter signing ceremony, Rabiul said, ‘The interim government did not invite us; rather, the police beat us.’
The injured include Mohammad Atikul Gazi, 22, Md Shariful Islam, 25, Md Ashraful Alam, 20, Saiful Islam, 23, Synthia Mim, 22, and Md Azizul Haque, 56, according to hospital authorities.
A photo of a youth circulated on social media showed that the youth identified as Atiqul Gazi fell off the ground and his artificial hand was seen lying on the road while the law enforcers charged baton on the protesters to disperse them.
The July National Charter 2025 was signed by 24 parties on Friday while the National Citizen Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh, the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod, Gano Forum and the SPB (Marxist) did not sign the charter.
