(20 Apr 2017) A sudden cold spell followed by snowfall on Tuesday night caused catastrophic damage to the agriculture industry in Bosnia.
Farmer Albino Lokvancic was examining the damage to his pear, apple and plum trees on Thursday, after some 30 centimetres (11.8 inches) of snow fell in Sarajevo.
Examining the many broken branches on the trees, Lokvancic said that once there is a crack in the branch "it's over".
Bosnia's farmers have prepared their farming fields for this sudden cold spell, but a snowfall of 30-40 centimetres (11.8-15.75 inches) and temperatures as low as -5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit) have destroyed an estimated 10-20 percent of fruit and vegetable produce.
Russia relies heavily on produce from Bosnia since sanctions imposed in 2014 ban the import of certain products from the European Union to Russia.
Bosnian farmers are bracing for even more trouble as forecasts predict heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures for another two days.
