Maria Stein Marion Local Captures Fourth-Consecutive State Football Championship, Eighth All-Time

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Flyers of Maria Stein Marion Local defeated Norwalk St. Paul 41-0 in the 2014 Division VII state championship on Saturday at Ohio Stadium to earn their fourth-consecutive OHSAA football state championship and eighth championship in school history (tied for third all-time). Marion Local capped off an undefeated season (15-0) with the victory, which also earned its 37th consecutive victory overall.

The Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) has won two 2014 OHSAA football state championships (Minster defeated Kirtland 46-42 Friday to win the Division VI state championship). We're very fortunate to play in our league (Midwest Athletic Conference), said Marion Local Head Coach Tim Goodwin. We know if we're in the top part of our league, we'll be very, very competitive in the postseason. With this senior class here, we've been at the top of the league. Its been really neat.

Marion Local used three first quarter touchdowns to give itself a comfortable lead. Two touchdown runs by senior Jacy Goettemoeller Time stamped of 49 yards 5:10 and 46 yards 20:10 gave Marion Local a 14-0 lead with 3 : 16 remaining in the first quarter.    • 44's Top 44: #35 Jacy Goettemoeller  

Just over one minute later, senior quarterback Dustin Rethman found junior receiver Hunter Wilker for a 33 yard touchdown pass. A one-yard touchdown run by Adam Nietfeld and a second touchdown pass from Rethman to Wilker of 29 yards gave Marion Local a 35-0 halftime lead.

Jacy Goettemoeller finished with 160 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns, which broke his Division VII state championship record for most rushing touchdowns in a game of two set in 2013. Dustin Rethman finished 14-of-18 with 215 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Marion Local defense held Norwalk St. Paul to 68 total yards, the fifth fewest total yards allowed in an OHSAA football state championship game.

With the victory, the Marion Local senior class capped off an illustrious career with its fourth consecutive state championship, 56 total wins and finished undefeated in the playoffs in its four years.

This year's team outscored its five playoff opponents 220-14. Marion Local holds the highest winning percentage (.866) of all OHSAA football teams in the playoffs, with an all-time playoff record of 58-9.

In the second year of the Division VII state championship, 11 team records were broken and four individual records were broken. Marion Local holds all Division VII team records and Marion Local players hold all individual Division VII records.

The attendance for the 2014 Division VII state championship was 7,291. The 2014 OHSAA football state championships continue Saturday with the Division I state championship kicking off at 3 p.m. and the Division V state championship beginning at 8 p.m.
