Vehicle Code 20002 is the California code section defining misdemeanor hit and run causing property damage; Vehicle Code 20001 is the code section defining felony hit and run causing injuries to a third party. California law requires that a driver who gets involved in a traffic collision stop immediately at the scene and provide identifying information to the other parties involved. If another party is injured, the driver must offer that person reasonable assistance in getting emergency aid. Failure to do so constitutes the crime of hit and run.

Vehicle Code 20002 is a misdemeanor and applies to hit and run cases where the accident only causes property damage, not injuries. A conviction under Vehicle Code 20002 triggers penalties of up to 6 months in jail, plus probation, fines and restitution.

Vehicle Code 20001 is the crime of felony hit and run. It applies when you get into an accident that causes injuries to a third party. A criminal conviction under Vehicle Code 20001 carries a sentence of 90 days jail to 4 years state prison.
