What to know about sundowning
Have you noticed sundowning symptoms tend to have a anxious feeling to it? Getting agitated, yelling, wandering, over all a very nervous energy. This is because at its core, sundowning is a way our folks with dementia manage anxiety when their old ways of coping are no longer there because of dementia. The key to stopping sundowning is to help our LO relieve that anxiety in a positive way

#1: Giving Something to Do with Their Hands
The easiest thing I do when I see signs of anxiety build like fidgeting, getting agitated more easily
is I give them a simple task to do with their hands so they can get the nervous energy can be put towards something, vs having it build into sundowning. To find the most success and avoid your LOWD refusing what you offer, personalize their hands on activity. If your dad was handy, there are fidget devices that are perfect for him to "help you fix". If your mom loved sewing or clothing in general, the fidget blankets are perfect for her. If you're on a budget, giving them busy work like sorting paper, folding or buffing something can help

#2: Change of Scenery/Going Outside
Have you ever felt cooped up and the cure was a little change of scenery? For our LOWD, when the nervous energy of sundowning happens, my go to cure is going outside. Like what I talked about before, just the action of moving to a different spot. Makes my folks feel like they are doing something

If it's possible to have your LOWD walk around or wheel them around, this is the best for getting that anxiety that fuels sundowning out. If you can't get outside, simply changing to a different room
as this also relieves anxiety of feeling "trapped" in one space that often triggers more intense sundowning.

#3: Exercise/Physical Activity
The last thing I'll do to stop sundowning is doing an exercise in the early afternoon. This is crucial as sundowning often leads to your LOWD not sleeping well due to the pent of nervous energy still being in them after sitting around at home all day and getting more agitated as the day goes on. Exercise of physical activity helps get that nervous energy out and tires them so they are more likely to sleep at appropriate times. If you need ideas on dementia friendly exercise ideas, my last video I give detailed ideas on this.
