French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou met on Tuesday (September 2) with representatives of right-wing The Republicans (LR) and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Renaissance party for negotiations on the budget ahead of a confidence vote in parliament on Monday (September 8).
Opposition parties have said they will bring down the minority government in a Sept. 8 confidence vote, which Bayrou unexpectedly announced last week as he seeks to push through unpopular plans for a budget squeeze in 2026.
Speaking after a meeting with Bayrou, LR leader Laurent Wauquiez said his party does not oppose budget cuts but rather aims to prevent higher taxes for the working class, who he says are “always the same people who pay.”
Renaissance leader Gabriel Attal said his group will not vote against Bayrou’s government, saying: “Do we consider that making the government fall will make it easier to adopt a budget by the end of the year? For us, the answer is no.”
If Bayrou does lose in the vote, it will trigger the fall of the government and Macron can appoint a new prime minister, ask Bayrou to stay on in a caretaker capacity for some time, or decide to call snap parliamentary elections.
