Описание к видео Medieval Memes in Early Modern Anglo-Dutch Historical Writing

This paper was presented as part of the British Academy-funded conference ‘The Literature and History of Anglo-Dutch Relations, Medieval to Early Modern’, which was held online between 6 – 8 January 2022.

Abstract: In her book The English Romance in Time, Hellen Cooper fruitfully applied the concept of memes to a reading of the proliferation of medieval romance motifs in early modern literature – also crossing generic boundaries, in Cooper’s case specifically in the use of motifs from medieval romance in early modern drama. It is this application of the concept that I shall explore in this paper, but with a focus particularly on historical writing, and adding to Cooper’s approach across periods between the medieval and the early modern and across genres between romance and drama, here is added an approach across languages and countries, between Dutch and English, and crossing the North Sea. Through the lens of memes, I shall focus on the impact of Anglo-Dutch relations on medieval and early modern Anglo-Dutch historical writing.

He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and was awarded the Society for Renaissance Studies Book Prize 2012 for his first monograph, Jan van Naaldwijk’s Chronicles of Holland.

This conference formed part of the North Sea Crossings project, a pioneering inclusive project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund about the literary heritage of Anglo-Dutch exchange, with a particular focus on young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
