Guan Yu is meant to be played like a very planted character, with below-average running speed but wide horizontal swings that's meant to cover his back as well. However, his square string has one vertical swing and one poke, RIGHT before his C6 with a pre-charge delay so massive that not even a lightweight weapon can guarantee 100% safety. For this reason, his safety is objectively worse than his two brothers.

Even if you give him a SPD 40 setup like Zhang Fei to help him more safely reposition himself after a musou-filling combo, there isn't a single move in his moveset that can be abused like Zhang Fei's C3. For this reason, he has a relatively hard time dealing with officers in a big crowd, but here's the thing: If a stage has a big enough crowd to give Guan Yu trouble, it most likely will ALSO have enough peons for Guan Yu to token-chain with, and Guan Yu during Rage is a BEAST!

Token-chaining opens up so many doors for Guan Yu, giving him the ability to clear stages that would be impossible for him without it. It was for this reason that I decided to put up with his annoying slow-running playstyle and keep using his 4th weapon, instead of finding him a better 3rd weapon so he can stack 40 SPD. High mid-tier, but a few placements below Zhang Fei.
