The construction of Hathaway Bridge across Saint Andrew Bay in 1929 allowed automobile access to the Gulf beaches. The new bridge joined two sections of the 'Gulf Coast Highway' to become U.S. Hwy 98. This event marked the beginning of Panama City Beach.
