1.THE THYROID: A SENSOR, NOT A SWITCH
From a naturopathic perspective, the thyroid isn’t a simple on–off gland.
It’s a metabolic sensor for your dog’s body. It constantly asks:
Is the body safe? Properly nourished? Inflamed? Detoxing well? Is the nervous system calm?
When stress or toxicity is present, the thyroid often slows metabolism as protection.
So low thyroid function is frequently adaptive — not broken.This is why simply adding thyroid hormone doesn’t always resolve weight gain, lethargy, skin and coat issues (including yeast), or anxiety and reactivity.
The root signal hasn’t changed.

2.THE HIDDEN THYROID SABOTEUR: THE LIVER
Here’s something rarely talked about: over 80% of thyroid hormone conversion happens in the liver.
Your dog may produce enough T4 — but if the liver is congested, inflamed, or chemically overloaded, it can’t convert T4 into active T3.What are some Common liver stressors ? Flea, tick, and worming chemicals, Environmental toxins, Processed foods, Chronic inflammation and Poor bile flow. This can lead to functional hypothyroidism, even when blood tests look “borderline normal.”
