The Amazing Voyage of the Fram Expedition

Описание к видео The Amazing Voyage of the Fram Expedition

The voyage of Fram is one of the most amazing ever undertaken by any ship.

Fram was a Norwegian three masted schooner built for the very specific purpose of being fixed in sea ice and withstand the pressure of the ice for a prolonged period of time. This period being years in the ice.

Fram means foreward in Norwegian and it was built for the Fram Expedition, which was an attempt by Norweigan explorer Fridtjof Nansen to reach the North Pole by ship.

The Fram was to be locked in the sea ice in Eastern Siberia and then follow along in the currents beneath the ice to get as close to the North Pole as possible.

The crew of the Fram counted 12 men including Nansen himself and a young Roald Amundsen, who would later use the Fram in his successfull expedition to the South Pole.

The Fram expedition did not succeed in reaching the North Pole, but got as close as any had been to that date and the Fram succeeded in drifting undamaged in the ice for years, which in itself was a great success.

The Fram can today be seen in the Fram museum in Oslo, Norway:
