Dear Friends,
Here's my second upload:
So sorry, my dearies! I thought I had it all nice and wholesome. Yet, I had failed miserably in my first upload. I detected some unforgivable errors. So please do forgive me. The latest upload herein bears the sincerest of corrections and improvement. I hope this upload will be wholeheartedly accepted. Cheers!
Time for some "easy-listening". It tells its lamentable story in a catchy, poppy pace of the 1980s. I love its tuneful simplicity. 陳百強 Danny Chan and his team had borrowed this popular 80s Japanese pop melody, injecting Cantonese Chinese lyrics into it so befittingly. It is "magical" as to how they have managed to blend every word, every nuance, every note, every pace and every instrument with all-rounded precision: form and content in perfect unison! Danny's artistry and vocals prove exquisite once again. His voice conveys the meaning and essence of the song with divine ease! What about the other Cantonese versions? Just forget them altogether! No offense intended.
The lyrics by themselves are neither original nor creative. Yes, they are clichés centred on regrettable lost and insufficiently reciprocated love. An all too familiar experience for the God-forsaken and wretched creatures known as human beings. Yet, we must keep moving on. I don't think this song is asking you to wallow in regrets and self-pity. The guy is "letting it out". A form of release, if you like. It's rather healthy in that sense. But I don't like the part of lame resignation: "to let a whole lifetime drift by....". No, my little darling, don't do that! He or she is NOT worth it! Dispel all the negative old patterns of thoughts and emotions. You must create a new life to the best of your ability. Let it all go. Aim for a "rebirth" or a "metamorphosis". Discard all the unbecoming elements, be it addictions, obsessions, things, people or places. Yes, it's a super-hard task. But it has to be done. There should be applicable limits to being "Deeply in Love with You".
So what does exactly being "deeply in love with you" mean? What are precisely the factors and characteristics you are so "in love with"? What does and should it entail? Could it be at times a form of fancy rationalisation and idealised justification for a self-serving mechanism, whereby it is insisted upon that that individual's sensitivity, empathy, understanding and other desirable qualities be EXCLUSIVELY AT YOUR SERVICE? Are you able to reciprocate to the extent that it becomes a healthy thriving and growing relationship? Or is it one-sided to the point of you being a "romantic vampire", draining his energies, faculties, inner and outer resources? Questions worth probing and exploring.
This track has long entered my top 12 Danny Chan favourites, owing to its magical catchy arrangement. But, it has hitherto failed to attract a painstaking translation from me. I deemed the lyrics bland, cliché-ridden and a little negative. Three factors prompted a change of mind: (1) As emphasised, its magical catchiness is impossible for me to ignore or dismiss. (2) Several viewers have pleaded for my translation. (3) Its continual popularity to this day.
It's been a long haul: portions of it were completed, then tucked away for some two and a half years! Another viewer's recent request alerted me to it, which triggered a reminder of previous requests for this song. At long last...here it is!. The whole project has been a troublesome enterprise. Naturally, I am hoping that it will be very well received, much appreciated and lovingly cherished. As always, please do convey your sincere thoughts and constructive criticisms. Happy viewing! Thank you for your kind attention.
Peace, Love & Liberty,
Yours Sincerely,
Chiki CHAN.
