A new psychological study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior has found that it is fairly easy to identify Trump supporters based solely on the prejudices that a person holds. While the report makes it clear that these attitudes didn't originate with Trump, he DID make them mainstream and allowed people to become more open about their hatreds towards other, and that has become a key indicator of support for him. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this new study.

The journal Nature Human Behaviour, on Monday of this week, published 13 individual studies and each one of those studies shows that the more prejudice a person is the more likely they are to be a Trump supporter. Thirteen different independent studies looking at the same thing, finding the same thing that a lot of us has known from the start, but at least now we have the empirical data to back it up, that Trump supporters are inherently prejudice people. They're bigots, basically. Not all of them, of course, but these studies do show that the more prejudices one holds, the more likely it is that they support Donald Trump. That is what they all found. So here's the thing. The researchers for all these studies made it clear, prejudice did not originate with Donald Trump, right? He did not make these people more racist. What he did was give them an avenue to vent their frustrations.
He made it feel okay for them to be more vocal about who they hate. And it's not just based on race. It's also based on religion. And again, they're very clear. These people held these beliefs long before Donald Trump showed up. Okay. Prejudice existed in this country forever and probably will continue to exist forever. Donald Trump didn't, I guess you would say increase it, but he did amplify it. He made people, these studies say, okay with voicing their frustrations at political correctness. And why can I not say this word? Why can't I say this word? Why do I have to use these kinds of pronouns? It makes me sad and angry to have to respect other people, basically. So there you have it. Obviously these studies go far more in depth than what I'm able to do right here. But again, we knew this. It's just nice to have the empirical data to back up what we had all basically been watching unfold for the last five years.
Donald Trump's, Donald Trump makes bigoted people feel like they’re welcome. Feel like they're hatred and prejudices against other people are valid. And that's the problem, the feeling of validation that he gave them. Because prior to that, they felt ashamed by this. They felt like they didn't have other people feeling the same way. That they didn't have to go and hide horrible beliefs. He made them okay with bringing it to the forefront. And that's the problem. These are horrible beliefs. People should be ashamed to hold them. It's not something you should wear on your sleeve. But he said, no, it's okay, you can. And that is of course why we have Nazi rallies in the United States today. That's why people feel more comfortable being like, yeah, I'm a white supremacist. Yeah, I'm a white nationalist. Yes, I like to wear swastikas on my clothing and have those flags hanging in my bedroom. Those people always wanted to do those things. Donald Trump made them feel okay with doing it out in public.
