When Ada, the world-famous robot artist, was born, few understood the impact that rapidly advancing artificial intelligence would soon have on arts and culture.

Originally built as an art-world provocation, Ada has risen to the upper echelon of the global art market, a space most human artists can only dream of ever reaching. As part of the UN’s AI for Good Summit in July 2025, Ada debuted its latest divisive piece, a portrait of King Charles III entitled Algorithm King. The robot was trained on photographs of the king before executing it in oil with its robotic arm. In scripted remarks, Ada emphasized the portrait was intended as a cultural statement, not a bid to replace human artistry.

The artwork proved divisive, with critics accusing Ada of undermining and devaluing the work of human creators. Many in the tech and art worlds see the robot as nothing more than a conversation piece that’s overstayed its welcome. They say it’s misleading to call Ada an artist, likening its output to AI image generators from ChatGPT and Midjourney.
