How SUTA Built a HUGE Saree Brand | Sujata Biswas, Tanya Biswas - SUTA

Welcome to another episode of the She Means Business Chat Show where we speak to Sujata Biswas and Tanya Biswas of SUTA.

I ran into them first at a flea market. Where they were selling awesome readymade saree blouses, that were easy to wear and incredibly cool. Of course I shopped!

I later started following them on Instagram and fell in love with their images, branding and products.

SUTA stands for thread. It is also a combination of their names. Hence the name is almost magical in describing the work that these sisters, who also happen to be partners, do.

With post graduation degrees in Management and Engineering, the two started out in typical 9-5 corporate jobs. However, the entrepreneurial bug bit.

Sujata and Tanya don’t really have a background in design or textiles but what they did have was a feeling that the saree could do with some innovations. They felt that the saree needed a younger, less complicated twist. “Why should one have to have that long drawn process of matching blouses, getting a petticoat, putting a fall? Why could I not wear a saree with a crop top or T shirt, without a fall and keep it far more simple and casual,” they wondered. Hence SUTA was born.

The other thing I really love about them is the way they are building the brand. With Sujata in front of the camera and Tanya behind, they are building a story so compelling that you stand mesmerized by the imagery of their products as well as the backstory behind each and every saree. They call their customers ‘sutaqueens’ and it’s a club that many women are loving being a part of!

Their approach to entrepreneurship is practical. There was much to learn from their no nonsense yet highly creative description of what it means to follow your passion.
