"There is something special in the air in Ramadan, people lead a spiritual life, a life of faith. There is a special character and spirit to that spiritual way of living, and it is different during Ramadan from others months of the year, especially at Al-Aqsa Mosque. People come from everywhere, from the north and the south, from the east and the west, from the West Bank, from the lands of 1948, from all over, to this holy and sacred site to be blessed."

STORYLINE:
Muslim faithful in Jerusalem broke their Ramadan fast with golden capped Dome of the Rock, perched atop the sacred Al-Aqsa compound, shining just a few meters away.

With plates of traditional food set on tables or on the ground, the faithful gathered to eat and end another day of fasting during the Muslim holy month.

The Jerusalem holy site known to Muslims as Haram a-Sharif – the third holiest site in Islam - draws worshippers from around Israel as well as Palestinians from the West Bank during Ramadan.

"This setting is very, very wonderful... I wish that everyone could be with us here and that they get to enjoy breaking their fast here," said Ahmad al-Araj, who broke his fast at the site.

The compound, revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, is also the most sacred site in Judaism.

The city’s contested compound has been a focus for clashes in the past, particularly in times of turmoil in Israel and the West Bank.

The Muslim faithful gathered there even though tensions in the city have been high.

Israeli police shot and killed a man who they alleged tried to snatch an officer’s gun at an entrance to a Jerusalem holy site early Saturday, raising fears of further violence during a time of heightened tensions at the flashpoint compound.

This year, as violence surges in the occupied territory under the most right-wing government in Israeli history, fears of an escalation in Jerusalem have mounted with the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
