Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has hit back at Donald Trump, calling him “demented” and “literally unhinged” after the former president demanded he and Chicago’s mayor be jailed.

Trump’s Truth Social post accused them of failing to protect ICE officers, following Illinois’ move to sue the federal government to block the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago.

The Department of Defence recently federalised up to 300 Illinois Guard members, with another 400 from Texas sent under Trump’s direction to support Homeland Security agents clashing with protesters.

Pritzker said Trump’s actions threaten civil rights and democracy, warning: “They willy-nilly run over people’s rights. They’re pulling people out of their houses. They’re asking them for proof of citizenship because they’re brown or Black.”

“That is a country I don’t think any of us should accept, and a president we should not accept,” he said.
