Ansonia High School Chargers 20 vs. New London High School Whalers 15 1988 CIAC Class S Football Championship Game.

From the Hartford Courant Article 12/5/1991-
Trailing 15-0 at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain, things looked bleak for Ansonia. Its top two quarterbacks were injured, so Hunt was forced to start sophomore tailback Kevin Sharkey. Sharkey, who went on to play at Brown University, had played only one game at quarterback.

But after New London's two first-quarter touchdowns, Ansonia's defense began to contain Johnson and the Whalers. In the third quarter, Sharkey ran in from a yard. Fran Hendricks had a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and the extra point made it a two-point game.

Ansonia got the ball at its 30 with 1:22 left. Sharkey (8-for-17, 179 yards) completed two passes for 17 yards. With 41 seconds left, Sharkey threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to All-State receiver David Donofrio.

Sharkey was leveled by New London lineman Jason Appleby -- who later played at the University of Connecticut -- as he released the pass and was helped off the field as his teammates celebrated. He made it back to knock down a pass on New London's next possession and help preserve the victory.

New London always game for Ansonia-
