🚨 Can Police Impound Your Passport? Supreme Court's Landmark Ruling Explained

⚖️ The Supreme Court ruled that only the Passport Authority under the Passports Act, 1967 can impound a passport. The police may seize a passport under Section 102 CrPC, but they have no authority to retain or impound it. Retaining a passport without proper legal backing is illegal and violates the right to personal liberty and free movement under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The judgment also strongly criticized the condition imposed on the appellant — to return the passports of his wife and son in exchange for the release of his own — calling it entirely unlawful.
