PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE WATCHING this is a class so there are some mistakes. If you are not our student, do what your teacher says not what you see here. Omotesenke-ryu [表千家流] tea class [virus tea] May 29, 2021. For our students we are videoing our class so they can have some tea experience during the emergency. Since there is just the two of us there are some limitations on what we can do.
In this case we are practicing the first charcoal arranging with a special incense container. This is one of the eight naraigoto that is the 1st license of Omotesenke. Since this requires special procedures for the guests, we have included the guest’s parts. This requires us to have Motomi be both host and last guest. Sorry about that.
The tana we are using, marujoku 丸卓, was invented by Rikyu. The kirikiji or bare wood version is Rikyu’s while there are several others by other Iemoto. It has the distinction of being the only one where the hishaku is placed on it upside down. [If you of another please let me know.] All the marujoku have three legs and their orientation should be the opposite of the furo. They should be turned the other way during ro season. This tana is also special in that is sometimes used in the tokonoma. A flower vase can be placed on the lower shelf and an incense burner on the top.
As usual, we have practiced without lighting the fire so as to conserve the special tea charcoal. It is very expensive and very hard to get here. We only burn it when we have guests.
