Paul Verhoeven's first three Hollywood films were authentic smash hits, beginning with the explicit brutality of RoboCop (1987), continuing through the gasp-making action of Total Recall (1990) to the viscerally explosive and controversial Basic Instinct (1992).

Sharon Stone played Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife in Total Recall, and she famously portrayed murder suspect Catherine Trammell in Basic Instinct. The critics said she nailed it with her brazenly sexual and cold-blooded portrayal. Basic Instinct turned into a worldwide sensation. It portrayed the story of a cop's search for a ruthless killer that leads him to a wealthy and a seductive author, and his involvement turns personal, where he must balance their affair with the mounting evidence against her. It starred Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, and Jeanne Tripplehorn.

In 1973 Verhoeven made his mark on cinema with his second film, Turkish Delight, that was Oscar nominated for Best Foreign Film. Verhoeven's films have received a total of 9 Academy Award nominations.
