How to Boost Your Child's Confidence and Self Esteem: Dos and Don'ts

Here are 5 common mistakes that parents do while trying to boost their child's confidence and self esteem, and better ways you can help your children develop a growth mindset and have a strong sense of self confidence.

Are you one of those parents who keeps praising their toddler? I was! As I started teaching my toddler to read almost 10 months ago now, every time she got it right I would keep telling her "you are so clever!" "you are so smart"... but then something strange started happening... Where she had been very enthusiastic and excited at first, every time I presented her with a new, slightly more difficult reading practice, she would resist... She just didn't even want to try. I started looking into it and, as I stumbled upon Carol Dweck's book Mindset, I realised I had done it all wrong. Overpraising children and praising traits of character (like intelligence) actually completely destroys their sense of self confidence. In this video I explain why, talk about some other common mistakes that parents do while trying to boost their children's confidence and encourage them, and offer some more effective ways to boost our little one's self esteem.
