1 Champa Shashthi is considered to be a significant occasion, particularly in the state of Maharashtra.

2 It occurs on the sixth day of the Shukla Paksha in the Margashirsha month as per traditional Hindu calendar.

3 The festival is traditionally dedicated to the warrior Hindu God - Martand Dev who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

4 The other famous names of this deity are Malhari, Martanda Bhairava, Khanderao (also spelt Khanderaya) and Khandoba.

5 The day actually commemorates the end of the great battle between Lord Khandoba and the demons Mani-Malla that went on for 6 long days.

6 In the same way, the festivities and traditional rituals are continued for a week in the different temples dedicated to Khandoba.

7 An annual Jatra (fair or a cultural program) is held in the Pembar village, which continues up to the new moon day.

8 This occasion holds utmost importance in the Khandoba temple at Jejuri near Pune. It is considered auspicious to visit this pilgrim site and partake in cultural activities hosted by the Devasthan.

9 In this temple, turmeric powder is considered as the Bhandar or Angara (sacred ashes of Lord Shiva) which is used as a Tilak by the pilgrims.
