STORYLINE

Kenya's opposition party suspended power-sharing talks with the government on Tuesday and angry youths detached part of a railway track in an impoverished area of Nairobi to protest delays in the country's power-sharing agreement.

In the Kibera shanty town, young supporters of the opposition also put up burning barricades and threatened more violence if a government that included Odinga was not formed quickly.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, who responded by throwing stones.

Diplomats also expressed impatience Tuesday, urging the Kenyan leaders to speed up the formation of a coalition government.

President Mwai Kibaki and Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) both claim to have won elections in December and have been trying to form a joint government to resolve the crisis.

More than 1,000 people were killed in weeks of clashes that followed the disputed election, and 300-thousand people were displaced.

Kibaki and Odinga, the prime minister-designate under the peace deal, agreed in February to share power, but they have yet to work out exactly how.

Both Kibaki and Odinga claimed victory in the December 27 presidential election. Observers said the vote was so flawed it was impossible to say who won.

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has also expressed concern over the slow formation of a new government under the deal he brokered.
