Father, blood in your brain and then you left us
When mom was forty-two with three kids
You were the sound that went away
Hushed soul, life of colour turned to charcoal
Buried with guitar-picks in that strange hole
And now you visit me in dreams
You haven’t aged and it seems real, so very real

All your singing fades each day in the memory of family and friends
Can you tell me where sound goes when it ends?

Illness, you come to call before I’m thirty
Before they help me, they must hurt me
That’s how boys are saved
Cut down every single tree and get the roots out
Though I’m a mess of blood and sawdust
I walk the road I paved
Baring burns from what I braved

Roads of numbness. Roads of pleasure. Map the miles and bends
Can you tell me where hurt goes when it ends?

Daughter, you haven’t mentioned it but you’ve heard
Your parents fighting over plans and dreams and long-embedded shame
What will you remember of your childhood?
Routine and vivid snap-shot still-lives? Laughs and masks and blame?
Coexistence in a frame?

You are wise; aware how love transfixes and transcends
So, can you tell me where love goes when it ends?

Love and sound and hurt:
Are they buried in the dirt?
Are they off to places no one comprehends?
