Long Island natives John Hampson and Brian Desveaux played in a heavy metal band and a cover band called Wonderama, until they decided to shift to songwriting-driven pop. They recorded their debut wonweekly shows at the Village Pub to midshipman Marines. After three albums, they had failed to break through, but in 1998, Hampson wrote a song about an argument he had with his girlfriend Teresa Savino when he "saw her talking to someone across the room, and she started laughing. I realized that as much as she aggravates me, I absolutely love her when she smiles." Hampson picked up a guitar and worked out the song in 15 minutes. The song became a hit radio single, reaching #6 on Billboard and selling 500,000 copies in the US. It would be their only hit. The band released four more albums, for a total of eight. Hampson currently teaches English in Wantagh, New York. He wrote and recorded alternate versions of "Absolutely" for the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once.
