Jim Baird: How to make a paddle out of a log in the backcountry: If you were to loose and / or break your paddles after dumping your canoe, kayak or raft in a whitewater rapid, paddle making is an emergency survial skill that could get you out of potential stranded situation. Of all the wilderness techniques to know, this one is high on the list when it comes to remote portaging and canoeing trips when you're wild camping well off grid. You'll need a bushcraft knife, an axe and a saw helps too. A large knife or a stout machete will be key for batoning the log. Othwise, you're best off using two wooden wedges to split the long while it's laying horizontally. Carving a paddle is also a fun traditional skill to learn whereever you are. On Alone Season 4, History Channel's bushcraft survival show which I was on along with my brother, I made two paddles using the same method. Here, I'm camped on the Mackenzie River in Canada's Northwest Teratories in 2017 after a 14 day canoe trip down the Mountain River. This adventure was my reward to myself for winning Alone.
