King David Hotel – Jerusalem

The King David Hotel in Jerusalem is, without a doubt, one of the most celebrated hotels in the Middle East. This landmark hotel is steeped in history is the preferred choice of world leaders and celebrities alike. It’s not the cheapest hotel, but it’s worth it, as it makes a visit to Jerusalem very special.

Built with art deco touches and opened in 1930, this six-story building made from traditional Jerusalem limestone does not really look special from the outside, but once you enter the lobby, its wow, wow, and more wow. Grand public rooms, massive columns, dark wood and marble flooring with the signatures of famous past guests, all leading to the veranda with incredible views of the old walled city of Jerusalem.

The hanging gardens of Babylon could not have competed with the oasis that is the gardens of the King David Hotel. Overloaded with loads of flowers, bushes, lawned areas and enormous shady trees, all located in one of the driest arid cities on earth, a real green lush garden of Eden. The centre piece of the garden is the massive outdoor pool and surrounding lawned areas, the perfect place to cool off on a warm summer’s day in Jerusalem.

We were lucky enough to stay at the King David Hotel for four nights in a fabulous Garden room. Located on the lower level, with its own private large patio area and filled with comfortable sunbeds, table, chairs, and an umbrella. It was the best place to enjoy a morning coffee or a sunset cocktail (we did both daily) as it overlooked the gardens and had the picturesque old city of Jerusalem as a backdrop. The rooms at the King David hotel are all well-appointed with modern luxury mixed with traditional dark wooden future, giving it a timeless feel. We loved our garden room and private patio, really made our trip special.

When it comes to breakfast, its hard to beat the buffet at the King David Hotel... think mountains of fresh pastries, fruits, cold cuts, cheese and even salad (Israeli’s love salad and fresh raw veggies I have discovered). Breakfast is served in the grand King’s Garden Restaurant, with its ballroom feel and large picture windows - make sure you ask for a window table so you can enjoy watching the morning sun hitting the old city.

The King David Hotel is located a short 10-minute walk from the old City’s Jaffa Gate, making it an ideal base for sightseeing around this historic city. Tel Aviv Airport is the closed international airport from the hotel and is approx. one hours drive away depending on the traffic.

Besides the massive pool, the hotel also has a fully equipped heath club and spa, a few very nice lobby shops, a beautiful lobby bar (The Oriental Bar), veranda to enjoy drinks on with the view of the old city as well as extensive conference facilities. Afternoon tea in the lobby is meant to be magical, unfortunately we did not have time to enjoy this, but means we need to go back one day!

The service is impeccable, with every staff member we came in contact with, being super friendly and helpful. Our room was kept spotless and clean. It really does feel special staying at this hotel.

I would rate this hotel 10/10, one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at.
