This video is of a stack of Xray images produced on the SMIF MicroCT scanner by Heather Kristjanson who is a part of the Center for Functional Anatomy and Evolution at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Each of the 5000+ slices shows the internal structure of this tree shrew -- from head to tail -- similar to how a CT/CAT scan would show the internal structure of a human in a hospital. The difference here is the extreme level of detail -- a resolution of just under 44 microns (per voxel, which is like a 3D pixel). Another notable difference is that this sample was prepared using an iodine stain that adds contrast to much of the soft tissue anatomy that otherwise would not show up. The detailed musculature, internal organs, and even the hair on the tail would normally just appear as shadows in the scan, but now are as clear as if it was a real dissection!
