Eosinophils high in blood test means | AEC | Absolute eosinophils count test kya hota hai | Eosinophilia | Eosinopenia
The Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) is a blood test that measures the number of eosinophils in a microliter (µL) of blood.
Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that play a role in:
Fighting parasites
Responding to allergic reactions
Involvement in autoimmune diseases and inflammatory responses

A *high eosinophil count*—called eosinophilia—means that your body has more eosinophils than normal in your blood. This can be a sign of an underlying condition, ranging from mild allergic reactions to more serious diseases.
🔍 Causes of High Eosinophils (Eosinophilia)
1. Allergic Reactions
Asthma
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
Eczema
Drug allergies
2. Parasitic Infections
Especially intestinal parasites (e.g., hookworms, roundworms)
Often more common in areas with poor sanitation or in travelers
3. Autoimmune or Inflammatory Conditions
Eosinophilic esophagitis or gastroenteritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Lupus
4. Skin Disorders
Atopic dermatitis
Pemphigus
5. Certain Cancers or Blood Disorders
Leukemia
Lymphoma
Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) – a rare condition where eosinophils are persistently high and damage organs
6. Adrenal Insufficiency (e.g., Addison’s disease)
A low eosinophil count—called eosinopenia—means there are fewer eosinophils than normal in your blood. In most cases, this is not a cause for concern and often does not indicate a serious health issue.
✅ Normal Eosinophil Range:
0 to 500 cells/µL
So, even zero eosinophils can be normal in certain situations.
🔽 Causes of Low Eosinophils (Eosinopenia)
1. Acute Infections
Especially bacterial infections
The immune system may shift resources to fight the infection, temporarily reducing eosinophils
2. Stress or Trauma
Physical or emotional stress
Severe illness or surgery
3. Corticosteroid Use
Medications like prednisone suppress eosinophils
Can happen with endogenous steroids (e.g., high cortisol in Cushing's syndrome)
4. Sepsis or Shock
Body’s stress response suppresses eosinophil production
