Описание к видео Grafeneck & Hadamar: Dr. Ernst Baumhard and the Nazi “Euthanasia” Killings. T4 Program History

In this video, I visit the former Nazi killing centres at Grafeneck and Hadamar, where the T4 “euthanasia” programme murdered thousands of disabled and mentally ill people deemed “unworthy of life” by the National Socialist regime. Before 1939, Grafeneck was a psychiatric care facility. But beginning in October of that year, it was transformed into one of the earliest systematic murder centres in Germany.

Here, I discuss the role of Dr. Ernst Baumhard, one of the physicians responsible for selecting and killing victims in carbon monoxide gas chambers disguised as shower rooms. Between January and December 1940, at least 9,839 people from 48 hospitals were murdered at Grafeneck. The killings then continued at Hadamar, where Baumhard was later transferred.

This video will show the locations as they appear today and follow Baumhard’s life—from his medical studies, early involvement in the Nazi movement, his participation in the first experimental gassings, his leadership role in Grafeneck and Hadamar, and finally his death aboard U-449 in 1943.

This history is difficult, but it must be remembered. The victims had names, lives, families, and futures that were taken from them. Their memory deserves to be preserved.

Ernst Baumhard was a doctor whose career was almost entirely devoted not to healing the sick but killing them. He was born on 3 March 1911 in Ammendorf near Halle (Saale) which you can see here. His father was a doctor and he followed in his father’s footsteps studying medicine at Halle. Whilst at university he joined the National Socialist German Student League. He applied for membership in the NSDAP on 10 June 1937 and was accepted retroactively as from 1 May 1937 (membership number 5,069,270). In 1938, he took over the leadership of the medical student council of the Nazi student leadership at the University of Halle . As a member of the SA , he attended the SA Higher Education School in Sandersleben .
As one of the first winners of the Reichsberufswettkampf, a National Vocational Competition, Baumhard was personally presented to Hitler on 1 May 1938.
Just before the war broke out in 1939, Baumhard received his licence to practice medicine and he received his doctorate his medicine after defending his dissertation , "The Effects of Straw Dust on the Human Organism and Measures to Prevent Damage Caused by It: Results of Investigations from the Cröllwitz Paper Factory,"
The subject of his dissertation suggests that he could have headed into a career in preventative medicine and done a useful service for humankind. However, it went in a different direction.
In mid October, Adolf Hitler presented Phillip Bouhler with a letter, backdated to the 1 September in which instructions were given to launch what was to become known as the euthanasia programme. It was not euthanasia but murder. This programme provided a list of expert doctors who were to decide on the fate of patients. The young doctor Ernst Baumhard was placed on this list. The reason can only be that he was considered a staunch National Socialist who must have shown some zeal for the policy of killing the sick. Baumgard was listed under the heading "Doctors in the Institutions" as a member of the T4 organization from 1 November 1939.
The first murder of a life considered not worthy of life had already taken place a few months earlier. It may be worth looking at the circumstances of how this policy came about.

In January 1940, Ernst Baumhard alongside other especially chosenT4 doctors participated in the first "test gassing" of patients in the old Brandenburg Penitentiary . It needs to be pointed out that whereas this was the first test gassing within the borders of pre war Germany, gassings had already started at Fort VII in Poznań in occupied Poland.
