What is Geo targeting?

Geo Targeting is essentially a mechanism through which marketers have the ability to customize their advertising based on a location. With the ability to personalize and define your targeted audience down to the zip code and with the rise of mobile phones marketers are jumping on the trend “location based mobile Ads trend”.
 
A recent study from IAB found that 66% of marketers believe that location based targeting is the "most exciting mobile opportunity for 2016"
 
Why?
The ability to customize advertisements based on where your audience has the ability to improve the relevance of an ad exponentially. Take for example, being here at SuperBowl 50 in San Francisco this week, Panthers or Broncos fans would never usually receive targeted ads from local marketers in the city. However, this would be the perfect opportunity for local restaurants and bars to target Super Bowl fans who are here for the next few days with their ads and special offers.
 
Another opportunity would be for companies like Lyft and Uber to target visiting fans with “SuperBowl 50” sign up codes in their ads.
 
And regardless of what industry you’re in, in a recent report from LSA, we can expect campaigns with granular geo targeting to produce a higher click through rates than those campaigns with out
 
Like all targeting you want to put your best foot forward when speaking to your audience and we're just at the beginning stages here. With apps, social platforms, and search engines all focused on collecting location based data, I think one thing we can definitely expect is improved relevance of Ads even with the slightest changes in location.
