Kingston, Jamaica has a history so dramatic that it reads like fiction. Founded in July 1692 after an earthquake completely destroyed the nearby city of Port Royal, Kingston emerged from catastrophe to become the Caribbean's most culturally significant capital.

In 1914, two young Jamaicans—Marcus Garvey and Amy Ashwood Garvey—founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Kingston, which became the largest organization of people of African ancestry in the world, fundamentally reshaping global Black consciousness and Pan-African movements.

By the early 1970s, Kingston's Trench Town neighborhood—built on the land of a former Irish plantation owner and named for its unpaved "trench" streets—became the birthplace of reggae music. Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, and countless others emerged from this working-class community to create music that would captivate the entire world.
Today, Kingston is Jamaica's capital with a population of 937,700 and serves as the center of trade, manufacturing, and shipping for the entire nation. Home to world-class athletes, museums, botanical gardens, and cultural institutions, Kingston represents a complete transformation from disaster to prosperity.
