Stephen Galloway: Inventing the Movement Director Career in Fashion

Описание к видео Stephen Galloway: Inventing the Movement Director Career in Fashion

As an artistic polymath, Stephen Galloway’s choreographic expression and elevated taste as a movement director allowed him to work across ballet, fashion, and rock n’ roll. Born in America’s heartland and raised in Pennsylvania, Galloway was fascinated by the world of dance early in his childhood through a neighborhood program. Under scholarship, his creative talent and dedication led him across the Atlantic, where he secured an 18-year legacy as a principal dancer with the renowned Frankfurt Ballet under American choreographer William Forsythe. Yet, his artistic prowess didn’t stop at dance; his childhood love for fashion fortuitously led him to become the creative director of Issey Miyake. His prowess in capturing the perfect scene also led him to oversee runway shows for fashion powerhouses like Versace and Yves Saint Laurent. When he wanted another challenge, he pushed himself to become a celebrated costume designer, crafting captivating ensembles for world-class institutions like the American Ballet Theatre, La Scala in Milan, and the Paris Opera.

Likewise, Galloway’s versatile talent did not stop at the footlights of a ballet stage. His unique eye for movement and aesthetics caught the attention of rock legends, The Rolling Stones, becoming their creative consultant and choreographer, touching everything from stage design to music videos. Simultaneously, he continued to break boundaries in the fashion industry, beginning his decades-long working relationship with the prestigious Dutch photographer duo Inez and Vinoodh. Utilizing his skilled understanding of movement and the perfect frame, Galloway has played a pivotal role in crafting some of contemporary fashion photography’s most iconic images. Models.com spoke with Galloway on how he got his start, how he gracefully leaps across disciplines, and how he continuously pushes boundaries.
