Walking tour of Ta Prom Temple, Siam Reap, Cambodia.
This walking tour was filmed on April 2023, starting at 04 :40 PМ
Ta Prohm is a temple of towers, enclosed courtyards, strangler fig tree and narrow corridors. Many of the corridors are impassable, crammed with jumbled heaps of elaborately hewn stone blocks hewn from the roots of long-rotten trees. The bas-reliefs on the convex walls are covered with lichens, mosses and creeping plants, and bushes sprout from the roofs of the monumental porches. Hundreds of years old trees tower overhead, their leaves filtering the sunlight and casting shade over the entire area.
The temple has been referred to as the "Temple of the Tomb Raider" or "Temple of Angelina Jolie" due to its depiction in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001).
Ta Prohm makes an incredible impression and serves as a reminder of what the temples looked like when they were found by Europeans.
Built in 1186 and originally known as Rajavihara (monastery of the king), Ta Prohm was a Buddhist temple dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII. This is one of the few temples in the Angkor region where the inscription contains information about the dependents and residents of the temple. Almost 80,000 people were required to maintain or visit the temple, including over 2,700 officials and 615 dancers.
The temple was built without mortar, and after it was abandoned, trees took root in the loosened stones. The trees growing from the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of the most popular temples among travelers. The temple has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1992.
I came to Ta Proma in the evening, before closing, and I saw not just ancient stones that are polished by tourists in an endless stream, but I felt the elusive aura of a place that was once rich in events and emotions.
Watch the walking tour and feel like you are really there, feel the beauty of this place.
I ended my walk at Srah Srang, translated as the Royal Bath - a baray or reservoir in Angkor, Cambodia, located south of East Baray. At present, Sra Srang measures 700m by 350m and is still partly flooded. The jetty is cruciform, flanked by naga balustrades, which end in a vertical serpent's head on which sits a garuda with outstretched wings. The steps leading to the water are surrounded by two guardian lions.
