Описание к видео Women of the Spiritualism Movement

Released from our Members-Only 2021 season:

In 1848, Maggie and Katie Fox communicated with spirits in their home. From this came the Spiritualism movement, a belief that the living could communicate to the dead. In the nineteenth century, the movement grew in popularity and many historical figures believed in to be true, including: Charles Dickens, Queen Victoria, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Mary Todd Lincoln, Marie Curie, and many more. In this program, historian Lesley Jones will share the fascinating history of female mediums and how they defied gender roles to give themselves power and social status.
