I recently completed a video on reading the surf zone and understanding where predatory species can be found. In this video I pieced together some clips of various fishing ventures were catches were far and few between, but some of the content was worth sharing. I actually hoped that the two uploads would complement each other covering species like Dusky Kob (Mulloway / Jewfish), Garrick (Leervis) and Shad / Elf (Tailor / Bluefish).

In this video I have shown the typical estuary structures that Dusky Kob would use to conceal themselves before ambushing their prey. The same structure would be used by Garrick / Leervis and even Shad / Elf when this species does venture into the estuary system. The structures I explain typically form right at river inlets, especially if there is a sandy bottoms. Large rock structures and river bends can also cause typical 'Eddies' and drop-offs which set the structures which allow for ambush points for predatory species.

A very important tip is to always fish with razor sharp hooks. Sharp hooks always ensure the strongest hooksets and hook holds and the regular use of a quality diamond file is crucial to any serious angler. Covering ground when hunting these species is key to locating the hotspots. its crucial to never overfish an area, but be aware that conditions will change over the course of a full change in tides.
