Описание к видео USA: HILLARY CLINTON SENATE CANDIDACY LATEST

(6 Feb 2000) English/Nat

The United State's First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, will officially announce her Senate candidacy in New York on Sunday.

She's spent 20 years in the shadow of her husband's ambitions, as a sometimes admired and sometimes reviled first lady in Arkansas and Washington, D-C.

Her supporters - including husband President Bill Clinton - see her Senate candidacy as the long-overdue attainment of a dream deferred.

Departing the South Lawn of the White House on Saturday afternoon, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton began her journey to become a candidate for the U-S Senate.

The battle begins in earnest on Sunday not far from the house she recently bought in the New York City suburb of Chappaqua.

UPSOUND: (English)
"Question: So are you now officially New Yorkers?
Answer: We're here."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, United States President

From a hall at a state university campus, with husband Bill, daughter Chelsea and her mother Dorothy by her side, Hillary will formally step into a political spotlight of her own.

The transition has changed her.

From an off-limits celebrity who never waded into the crowd or acknowledged a reporter's question, she's now an eager candidate, shaking every hand in sight and holding press conferences.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Everywhere I have gone people talked to me about issues like we discussed today and that is very exciting to me because I believe that if we work together we really can make a difference for the children and families of New York. So the answer is yes, I intend to run."
SUPER CAPTION: Hillary Rodham Clinton

But the evolution from First Lady to Senate candidate has not been easy.

She's taken heat for sitting silently while Yasser Arafat's wife criticised the Israelis and she upset Puerto Rican officials by failing to tell them she would oppose clemency for jailed F-A-L-N members.

Perhaps the furore she's faced over so many of her pronouncements explains her claim to have no opinion on the fate of the Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez.

Despite surviving a number of hiccups already in her campaign, she faces a much bigger task between now and the November 7 election.

She will have to convince New York voters that she is the best person to represent their state in the U-S Senate.

Hillary Rodham Clinton's popularity soared during the impeachment struggle, with two-thirds of Americans saying they approved of her brave smile and the way she soldiered on.

But as the wounded wife image faded and the Senate candidate emerged, she lost ground.

The rock-star treatment she once received from crowds has turned into polite applause.

Polls now have her almost neck and neck with New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, her likely Republican opponent.
