Flashes on the eye are caused by a little pull on the retina, may be what we call as the vitreous traction. If it persists for a long time, one needs to get the eye examined by an ophthalmologist and a detailed retinal examination is mandatory. Flashes of light can also be due to retinal detachments, maybe harmless also in the form of Posterior Vitreous Detachments, or what is commonly called as PVD, which occurs with age. If flashes of light are associated with shower of floaters, or what is called as floating of objects into the eye, then it is serious issue, which needs to be handled or examined immediately. Occasionally the flashes of light may be associated with severe headache, which is called as the migraine. So the flashes of light may signify what is called as an aura. So if the flashes of light are persisting for more than 3 days, associated with floating objects or shower of floating objects, then one needs to examine the eye with a retinal specialist with a complete detailed eye examination.
