Adam Riess: New Measurements of the Expansion Rate of the Universe

Dr. Riess measures the cosmological framework with exploding and pulsating stars (type-Ia supernovae and cepheid variables). He led the High-z Team which provided the first evidence for the accelerated expansion of the Universe. His following work to find the most distant known supernovae with the Hubble Space Telescope, all at redshift greater than 1, showed the first highly significant detection of the early decelerating epoch of the Universe. This helped to corroborate that the expansion is consistent with an increasingly dominant dark energy component of the cosmological energy-density budget. Currently, he leads the SHOES Team in efforts to improve the measurement of the Hubble constant, and the HIgher-z Team to find and measure the most distant type-Ia supernovae to probe the origin of cosmic acceleration. Along with Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt, Dr. Riess was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 for the groundbreaking discovery of the accelerated expansion of the Universe. The full title of his talk was "New Measurements of the Expansion Rate of the Universe, Hints of New Physics?".
