IELTS vs TOEFL - Which English Test Should You Take?

Many of you have asked me: "Which test should I take, the IELTS or the TOEFL?". I took both tests, the IELTS and the TOEFL. We have a look at all four parts of the tests and I tell you where they differ and where they are similar. In the end you should be able to decide which test you want to take: the IELTS or the TOEFL.

IELTS Listening vs TOEFL Listening

In IELTS Listening you listen to conversations and a talk or a lecture. The questions are a mix of fill in the gap and multiple choice questions. IELTS Listening is especially challenging for two reasons. First, you must answer the questions while you are listening to the recording. Second, for some questions you must understand the exact word or words that the speaker mentions.

In TOEFL Listening you listen to conversations and lectures. There are only multiple choice questions, no fill in the gap questions. The main difference between IELTS and TOEFL Listening is that in the TOEFL you first listen to the audio and after that you answer questions.

My Tip
Check out which test format you like better. Do you prefer answering the questions while listening or do you prefer taking notes and answering them afterwards? Also, if understanding and spelling words is difficult for you, you may want to consider the TOEFL.

IELTS Reading vs TOEFL Reading

IELTS Reading and TOEFL Reading are quite similar. In both tests you have to read several passages and you must answer a number of questions. Also, for both tests you need a reading strategy to filter out the relevant information.

My Tip
Although IELTS Reading and TOEFL Reading are quite similar, I think that IELTS Reading is easier than TOEFL Reading. I found the questions in IELTS Reading easier and the passages less complex compared to TOEFL Reading.

IELTS Writing vs TOEFL Writing

In IELTS Writing there are 2 writing tasks. In task 1 you have to describe something, for example, a chart or a map. In task 2 you have to write an essay.

In TOEFL Writing there are also 2 writing tasks. Task 1 is the integrated essay: you first read an article and after that you listen to a lecture. In your essay you must state the arguments of the writer and the counterargument of the lecturer. Task 2 is the independent essay which is quite similar to task 2 in IELTS Writing.

My Tip
The main difference between IELTS Writing and TOEFL Writing is task 1. In my opinion IELTS Writing is a bit harder.

IELTS Speaking vs TOEFL Speaking

The IELTS Speaking test is face-to-face. In TOEFL Speaking you speak into the microphone of your computer. TOEFL Speaking is quite challenging because in some of the tasks you must read a passage and listen to the audio and then you need to combine this information and deliver your answer. Further, note-taking is quite challenging in TOEFL Speaking.

My Tip
Think about whether you prefer talking to a person or a computer. Have a look at the task types of the TOEFL and check whether you can cope with that.

Taking the IELTS vs Taking the TOEFL

You can take the IELTS on the computer or on paper. In some countries at home, you can currently take the IELTS at home, this is called the IELTS Indicator. Pay attention because not all institutions accept the IELTS Indicator. The TOEFL is always computer-based. You can take the test in the test center or at home, this is called the TOEFL Home Edition. Again, make sure that your institution accepts the TOEFL Home Edition.
